How to drive safely in Kerala’s rainy season
Wet roads, low visibility and hydroplaning — a practical monsoon checklist for new drivers.
Kerala’s monsoon punishes late braking and bald tyres. Slow down, increase following distance and make sure wipers, lights and tread depth are ready before a heavy squall.
Aim for at least a four-second gap in hard rain. Avoid sudden steering. If you hydroplane, ease off the accelerator, hold the wheel steady and wait for grip — do not slam the brakes.
Use headlights so others see you. Let ABS work with firm, steady pressure. Keep traction aids on unless your instructor teaches a specific recovery drill.
Practise wet-road habits with a dual-control instructor before peak monsoon. Confidence in the rain is a skill you can train — not luck.
